What Does It Take To Host a Small Group?
When it comes to Hosting a small group, it really is quite simple. Using the acronym HOST here's all it takes to Host a small group:
Heart for Christ and people
Open your home (or gather at church; a local restaurant, your workplace... etc.)
Serve some snacks (a role that can also be shared with group members)
Tell a few others
If you're saying, "I can do those things" God has given you everything you need to Host a LIFE Group!
You might not think you're ready to Host or that you have what it takes — Moses didn't think he had what it took to lead either — and yet look what God did! () God isn't always looking for the qualified, but more often qualifies those He chooses. More than ability God looks for availability.
When God tapped the shoulder of His first disciples, and called them into a lifetime of ministry He didn't tap the shoulders of Bible experts or people with years of experience. He approached ordinary, everyday people and simply asked them to follow Him one step at a time — promising them He'd enable them to do what He was calling them to do.
God is still in the business of using everyday ordinary people to connect with those around us in meaningful, life-changing ways. If you like, ask a friend to begin this ministry adventure with you!
Hosting a LIFE Group is as simple as A. B. C.
Either on your own, or better yet, with another friend, or couple, first:
Ask God who.
God has placed numerous, if not dozens of people into your life. You already know them, or would like to get to know them better. Why not tap their shoulder and invite them to your group? Who's number is saved on your cell phone? Who do you know from church? From work? In your
neighborhood? Who are the parents of kids on your child's sports teams?
How to Find Group Members
Once you have a list, simply ask them if they'd join you and a friend, or you and your spouse, to go through a small group study together. The invitation can be as simple as: "Hey, a few of us are
getting together to go through this study together... on such and such a date and time... it's for this season of time... would you join us?" More often than you might expect, people say yes...
Once you've asked God who...
Begin contacting them right away.
Either in a face to face conversation or over the phone, contact each person God put on your heart, letting them know that you (and possibly another friend or couple) are forming a small group and you were wondering if they'd like to attend.
When you make the invitation make sure to mention that they don't have to be a Bible expert to
attend, and that they won't be put on the spot or embarrassed. More than committing for a year, ask if they'd simply like to join you for a season (say for example, through the Fall), even here let them know that can even test drive your group for a time or two and see if they want to commit for the rest of the Fall season.
